Wrexham bishop to receive honorary fellowship

3 July 2009

The Bishop of Wrexham is to receive an honorary fellowship from the town’s university exactly 50 years to the day since he first became a priest.

The award from Glyndŵr University is in recognition of Bishop Edwin Regan’s commitment to the community in Wrexham.

He will be presented with the fellowship following Mass at a special ceremony in the university’s William Aston Hall on Sunday afternoon.

Professor Michael Scott, Vice-Chancellor of Glyndŵr University, paid tribute to the work of Bishop Regan since his appointment as Bishop of Wrexham in November 1994.

“Edwin has brought warmth, joy and comfort to everyone he has met during his time as Bishop here in Wrexham,” said Professor Scott.

“His dedication and commitment to making the town a better place to work, live, study, and to visit, has been there for everyone to see.

“We have a strong community spirit uniformly across Wrexham and that is largely down to the work of Bishop Regan. I’m sure he will continue to do great things for the town for many years to come.”

Bishop Regan was born in Port Talbot in December 1935 and became an ordained priest on 5 July 1959 when he was appointed Priest of Menevia. He became an Ordained Bishop in December 1994 just a month after being appointed Bishop of Wrexham.
