Glyndŵr University explores the limitations of computers
9 June 2009
Glyndŵr University is set to discover whether computers really can solve any type of problem.
Professor Vic Grout will host the fifth lecture in the University’s 2009 Professorial and Inaugural Lecture series when he discusses ‘How hard can it be? – A gentle overview of complexity theory and limitations of computers’ on Thursday 25 June at 7.00pm.
The lecture will look at whether computers and clever programming can really solve any type of problem or whether some issues are just too complex even for the most sophisticated, advanced programming.
Prof Grout is a Professor of Network Algorithms, the study of step-by-step mathematical and linguistic procedures for solving problems. In his talk he will examine the distinguishing features of easy and hard problems and how one problem can often masquerade the other. He will also use a number of simple and easy-to-grasp examples to discuss the differing levels of complexity that are associated with computational problem solving.
Prof Grout said: “There seems to be a myth that computers can solve anything but, as my lecture will illustrate, this is not always the case. In fact mathematicians are still unable to ascertain whether computer programmes can actually solve the most complex problems.”
The lecture series, which runs until July, aims to provide an opportunity for the wider community to explore and discuss new research being carried out by Glyndŵr University.
Professor Michael Scott, Vice-Chancellor at Glyndŵr University said: “Our public lecture series has been a real success so far and I’m sure this lecture will also generate a lot of interest. Here at Glyndŵr University we have a strong ethos of opening up learning opportunities and engaging with as many people as possible from the local community.”
Prof Grout currently leads the Centre for Applied Internet Research (CAIR) at Glyndŵr University. He also chairs a biennial international conference series on internet technologies and applications, hosted by the university at its Wrexham campus.
The lecture will begin at 7.00pm in the Nick Whitehead Theatre at Glyndŵr University’s Plas Coch site, Mold Road, Wrexham. A drinks reception will follow the lecture, where attendees will get the chance to meet the speaker and discuss the evening’s topic in more detail.
