Become a Time Traveller on board Wrexham & Shropshire

07 December 2009

Glyndŵr University and Wrexham and Shropshire railway are offering a unique opportunity to combine a spot of Christmas shopping in the capital with a trip back in time.

Taking place on 15th December, passengers on the Wrexham - London direct service can enjoy a History of London lecture from Glyndŵr University lecturer Rod Playford.

Passengers can board the 07.23 from Wrexham service to London Marylebone for a two hour session on the history of London, exploring topics such as Samuel Pepys’ London, Christopher Wren and the rebuilding of the city after the great fire and how the Welsh Tudors shaped the Capital.

Spaces are limited, and passengers can sign up for the bargain price of just £40. The talk will be conducted through headphones provided on board.

Passengers will arrive in London with plenty of time to explore some of London’s famous historic sites or enjoy a spot of Christmas shopping.

And, if all that history isn’t enough, they could visit some of London’s top museums such as the V&A or Natural History Museum.

Rod Playford will also be available on the return journey from London at 18.33 to chat about the morning’s lecture and answer any questions.

Suzanne Riley, Commercial Manager at Glyndŵr Innovations is behind the organisation of the event.  She said, “We wanted to do something different that would demonstrate to people that learning doesn’t just have to take place in a classroom or lecture theatre.

"In the future we would like to offer other subjects so people can make the most of their time while travelling and learn something of interest.”

Thomas Ableman, Wrexham & Shropshire’s Marketing Director, said: “We’re always looking for ways to make travelling to London more enjoyable for passengers and are delighted to be working with Glyndŵr University and The Chester/Shrewsbury Rail Partnership on such an innovative project.

"London is a fascinating city with so much history and when better to learn about it than as you travel. We expect this to be popular so advise booking your place as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.”

A second history train will run in January meaning those who can’t make December’s won’t miss out.

For more information or to book a place on either trip please contact Suzanne Riley on Tel 01978 293007 or visit the Glyndŵr Innovations website.
