Writers combine to produce new book for students16 October 2008
A new book has been launched to help students from families with no experience of higher education ease into life at university. The book, Essential Study Skills for Health and Social Care, was put together by staff at Glyndŵr University to provide new health students with essential academic study skills. The comprehensive 192-page resource contains advice on internet skills, referencing, essay and report writing, research skills and CV and interview techniques, among others. Essential Study Skills for Health and Social Care was edited by health and social care lecturers Marjorie Lloyd and Peggy Murphy, but included contributions from across the university, including library staff. It is particularly aimed at those studying health-related subjects, including nurses, social workers, youth workers and occupational therapists, but also contains useful tips applicable for any area. All of the authors took time out to sign students’ copies of the book at a launch party in Glyndŵr University’s Edward Llwyd Centre on Wednesday 15 October. Ms Lloyd said: “I was contacted by book publishers Reflect Press about a year ago about writing the book and I was more than happy to get involved. I thought it would be good to get others involved so I approached colleagues in the university and asked if they’d like to write in the book as well. Everyone was very keen and they were given freedom to write about what they wanted. “The book extends our commitment to widening access as it’s ideal for first generation students from families where no-one has been to university before. The demands of studying in higher education can be daunting but the book will hopefully make this part of their university experience a bit easier. “I’ve already had enquiries from lecturers across the country wanting to receive copies of the book.” Essential Study Skills for Health and Social Care is published by Reflex Press Ltd, priced £12.99. It is available to buy online at www.reflectpress.co.uk or www.amazon.co.uk; by email to reflect@bebc.co.uk, or by calling 01202 712934. It is also available from all good bookshops. |
