Sport facilities gain Paralympic Pre-Training camp status11 June 2008
Following the success of being named an Olympic Pre-Training camp for 2012 NEWI has also successfully gained Paralympic Pre-Training camp status. Sport@NEWI have qualified in hosting a selection of seven team sports including Football, both 5-a-side and 7-a-side versions, Wheelchair Basketball, Wheelchair Fencing, Wheelchair Rugby and Paralympic Judo. The facilities will also play host to a sport called Boccia which is very like bowls. NEWI student and Sport Scholarship holder Gareth Stafford participates in this sport and is currently in the Welsh squad with aspirations as a competitor for this 2012 event. Sport@NEWI, along with the North Wales Regional Tennis Centre and Queensway Stadium, has been assessed and shown to have a strong focus on standards of accessibility and accommodation. Anna-Marie Brown, Sports Centre Manager at NEWI is delighted by the news. “This is great news for us. We now hope through advertising our venue at the Beijing Games that national sporting bodies will venture to North Wales for their training prior to the Paralympic event.” |
