Glyndwr University and Flintshire County Council in sports partnership

Budding sport development officers are to be given a head start in their careers thanks to a new partnership between Glyndŵr University and Flintshire County Council.

Sport and Exercise Sciences at the Wrexham university has joined forces with Sport Flintshire, Flintshire County Council’s department responsible for promoting sport and leisure opportunities in the region.

The partnership will give first and second year students studying on any one of Glyndŵr University’s sports courses an extended two or three year placement.

Students selected will get invaluable experience of working in all aspects of sport development - everything from running school sport festivals to coaching as part of ‘5 x 60’ programme, a new Sports Council for Wales initiative to get 90% of secondary pupils achieving 60 minutes of physical activity five times a week by 2020. Other placement opportunities will include working with children who are not actively engaged in sport and physical activity, sports club development, coach education and work shadowing of senior Sport Development Officers.

Sport Flintshire will mentor the successful students, paying for their coaching qualifications and giving them a wealth of opportunities to enhance their employment prospects once they graduate.

The agreement comes just weeks after the university’s Sport and Exercise Sciences subject area was ranked in the top 5 in the UK for student satisfaction.*

Jackie Bryson, Principal Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Sciences, said: “We’re delighted to enter into such a great partnership with Sport Flintshire which will allow our students to gain crucial work experience. Getting ahead in the job market is more important than ever before and I am sure the partnership will give our students a strong grounding before they graduate.”

Sian Williams, of Sport Flintshire, said: “This partnership is the first of its kind in North Wales and cements the strong working relationship we have with Sport and Exercise Sciences at Glyndŵr University. The extended placements will give the university’s students a real head-start in getting ahead in this rapidly expanding job market.”
