Nursing students expand their skills

19 April 2007

Students on two of NEWI’s nursing courses attended a special lecture this week to learn more about dealing with emergencies outside of the hospital environment that they are used to.

The students on the BN (Hons) Nursing courses attended a session this week which included a formal lecture, a DVD form the British Heart Foundation and practical demonstrations as well as the students carrying out practical work themselves.

The students, who are all specialising in either adult nursing or mental health nursing, took part in practical excercises in life saving support such as giving CPR.  Stella Ferguson a nursing lecturer at NEWI said, "It is such a valuable part of their studies.  Emergency situations can arise anywhere and this is about saving lives in an emergency without the equipment the nurses would have access to on the wards."
