NEWI launches its Welsh Language Policy

The North East Wales Institute of Higher Education (NEWI) launched its Welsh Language Policy last week.

The scheme has been produced in accordance with the Welsh Language Act 1993, and has been through an in-depth consultation and approval period within the Institute, publicly and with the Welsh Language Board.

To launch the ceremony members of the board of governors, NEWI’s senior management team, representatives from the Welsh Language Board and other invited guests attended an event held in NEWI’s Art Gallery, Gallery 103, where Mr Alun Lloyd-Jones from the Welsh Language Board presented a certificate approving the policy to Professor Michael Scott, Principal and Chief Executive of NEWI.
Professor Scott welcomed everyone to the launch of the policy which he believes is fundamental to NEWI’s priorities of improving the employability of our graduates and making a contribution to the social and economic development of the region.

Elen Mai Nefydd, a lecturer at NEWI spoke of the importance of the policy.  She said, “We are delighted that as full members of the University of Wales, we are able to take the next important step, not only to recognise the equality of the Welsh and English languages, but also to outline the ways in which we will be promoting the use of the Welsh language throughout the Institute and the wider community. “

Guests at the event were entertained by Elinor Bennett, one of Wales’ most acclaimed musicians, who gave a performance on the harp as well as treating guests to a special vocal performance.
