Lord Barry Jones to become President

NEWI has appointed Lord Barry Jones as President of the Institute.

The role of President at NEWI will mean that Lord Barry Jones will become figurehead for NEWI, raising the profile of NEWI and acting as an ambassador for the Institute and its staff and students. He will attend special events and visits at NEWI including NEWI’s Award Ceremonies in November and act as a point of advice for the Institute. The appointment was made following approval by NEWI’s Board of Governors.

Lord Barry Jones has worked in local industry and education and was MP for Alyn and Deeside from 1970 until his retirement in 2001 During three decades as a politician Lord Barry was Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Wales, Opposition Spokesman on Employment, and Shadow Secretary of State for Wales as well as on the Parliamentary Intelligence and Security Committee. Born and brought up in this area; he has always campaigned for a number of local issues and raised the profile of north east Wales. He was at the forefront of the development of the A55 expressway and Deeside Industrial Park and has worked hard to protect jobs in the area.

Principal and Chief Executive of NEWI, Professor Michael Scott said “I am excited about the announcement of a President position at NEWI, Lord Barry Jones has always been a great ambassador for NEWI and for North East Wales and I am delighted that he has accepted this position. The whole Institute joins me and the Board of Governors in welcoming him into our community of learning.”
