Close Encounters of the Third Age
4 June 2007
Nostalgia is on +the menu at the annual NEWI Humanities Summer School which takes place at NEWI at the end of this month, from Monday 25th until Thursday 28th June.
The four day event for the University of the Third Age is aimed at retired individuals with various interests who want to continue their education in an informal and lively setting. Participants can sign up for a variety of stimulating programmes led by academic specialists from Film and Media, English Literature, Writing and History.
Film buffs can take a trip down memory lane with a session illustrated with highlights from British cinema history from World War Two to the present day, everything from Brief Encounter to The Full Monty. A wartime theme also runs through the programme on day three with readings and a discussion of Sarah Water’s acclaimed novel The Night Watch.
For fans of Western movies there will be a chance to compare myth with reality by exploring how the American West was really won with the help of historian Rod Playford. There are also sessions for beginners who want to find out more about local history. For budding writers there will be an opportunity to try their hand at creative writing and the art of advertising copywriting.
Dr Richard Dover, Head of Humanities at NEWI, said “the Summer School shows that higher education is for everyone. This programme is ideal for anyone who enjoys thinking and exploring new ideas and meeting new people.”
The cost of the programme is £25 and places can be reserved by calling Nikki Johnson on 01978-293272.
