Students discover their roots

24 July 2006

NEWI has been helping people to unearth their family history this month. People were invited to take part in a free four day course which enabled successful students to receive a Certificate in Family and Community History.

The course was aimed primarily at beginners in local history and all the courses were fully subscribed, attracting people from all over the region. The students learnt how to research their family tree, helping them to not only discover who their ancestors were but also how they lived.

Course Director, Dr Kathryn Ellis said “this is the first time we have run Family and Community History here at NEWI and we have been delighted with the way the course has gone and the feedback from students. Television programmes, like the BBC’s ‘Who Do You Think You Are?’ have stimulated interest in this field of study and we hope to run similar courses throughout 2007.”

Anyone interested in studying history at NEWI, whether as part of a degree or for general interest, can contact Nikki Johnson on 01978 293169.
