Open Day offers some unusual opportunities
26 June 2006
Visitors to NEWI’s Open Day on Wednesday the 28th June will be given the opportunity to uncover hidden artistic talents while finding out about NEWI and the courses it offers.
The day will feature a wide range of subject talks and demonstrations, but more unusually visitors on the day are being invited to get involved in the production of a huge piece of artwork. Tim Atherton, a student on the Foundation Degree in Art course is running a ‘Wall art’ painting workshop. Tim held a similar workshop for students and staff as part of his professional practice module and it was such a success that he has agreed to do it again for the Open Day.
Tim’s original event was inspired by the idea of cave paintings. Everyone will be encouraged to take part and have a go at painting something on huge canvases. The result last time was a series of huge panels which looked fantastic and will be auctioned for charity on ebay.
NEWI’s Traditional Chinese Medicine staff and students will also be providing something a bit different for visitors to get involved with in their Tongue and Pulse workshops!
Other highlights of the day will be the opportunity to create a remix using the NEWI sound studio; a chance to visit the recently refurbished Human Performance Laboratory and a range of engineering demonstrations looking how to make a hot air balloon, air-flows around aeroplanes and cars, how water is used to power objects and the operation of satellite TV and radio.
Subject talks will be available in a range of areas including: Built Environment, Business, Community Justice, Education, Nursing, Science and Substance Use. In addition there will be the opportunity to look at art and design work produced by students and a visit to the automotive laboratory will give visitors the opportunity to see NEWI’s performance cars.
