Low drop-out rate for nursing students at NEWI

15 February 2006

High drop-out rates of student nurses have been widely reported in the press this week but at NEWI in Wrexham it is a different story with a drop-out rate on nursing courses of only around 6%.  Considerably lower than the 24.8% UK average quoted by the Nursing Standard and lower than figures quoted in the media for any other UK University.

Professor Kate Sullivan from NEWI said, “I believe our attrition rates are so low compared to other universities because of the pastoral care our students receive here.  Over recent years there has been an increase in nursing students coming from a wide range of backgrounds.  At NEWI we have an excellent record for attracting students from different backgrounds so we are used to doing the extra work it takes to retain students.  Staff here are very committed and it is thanks to them that nursing students here receive such excellent support and in 94% of cases are able to successfully complete their course.”
