Christmas celebration of British culture14 December 2006Individuals who have come from overseas to live and work or study in the Wrexham area have been finding out more about British culture at NEWI. The 5 week course was attended by individuals from all over the world including China, Poland, France and Germany. Those who took part in the course learnt about all aspects of British culture and took the opportunity to discuss British culture with people from different nationalities and backgrounds. They also made the most of the opportunity to ask the tutors questions about their experiences in Wrexham and things they didn’t understand. Sarah Grain, Widening Access Officer at NEWI said: "The course dealt with everything from British history and politics to television and music. "There were lots of opportunities for discussion and questions. Many wanted to know more about our traditions and asked about the history of why we have pancake day and what bonfire night is all about." Karol Srorozynski who attended the course felt that it had enhanced her understanding of British culture and gave her increased confidence in her English skills. "It was really interesting," she said. "I’ve learnt a lot about the place where I live and I’ve met a lot of new people." For their final class the group celebrated with a Christmas evening, indulging in the obligatory British mince pie as well as some traditional Christmas foods from their native countries. |
