School of Humanities

The School of Humanities covers a broad range of subjects: Broadcasting and Journalism, Creative Writing, English, History, Media Communications, Screen Studies, Theatre, Television and Performance, Print Journalism, and Welsh Translation.

The School also runs a Certificate programme in Family and Community History and short courses in Celtic Studies, Welsh Language, European Languages and British Studies. In addition the School delivers two taught postgraduate programmes, an MA in English Literary Culture: 1880-1920 and an MA in Local History.

The School is friendly and approachable and we place great emphasis on providing support and encouragement for all students. Teaching and learning in the School of Humanities takes a number of forms, from formal lectures and viewing sessions, to seminars, tutorials and workshops. Staff are highly qualified, both in terms of academic status and professional experience and a number of staff members are engaged in current professional practice (in areas such as Writing, Journalism, Broadcasting and Theatre & Performance) which feed directly into their teaching and provide links and contacts for students.

Degree programmes in Humanities are ideal for those people who want to broaden their horizons and who want and need a stimulating programme of study which will provide a springboard into diverse and exciting career possibilities. Subjects can be combined across the BA portfolio, and there are a range of degree titles available. Students in the School come from all backgrounds, from sixth form entrants to those students returning to education to further their career.

The School of Humanities has exciting links with local theatres, including Clwyd Theatr Cymru and contacts with organisations including the BBC, local councils and organisations as well as companies in the region.

There are excellent facilities on campus, with dedicated performance space in the Terry Hands Studios for Theatre and Performance students, and a new conference & performing arts centre.
