North Wales School of Art & Design

The outstanding work produced by students at the North Wales School of Art & Design has given the School an international reputation for innovation and excellence. This is demonstrated continually by the number and range of prizes won by the School’s students in national and international competitions, including the prestigious D&AD Awards and the Macmillan book prize.

The staff at the School are no strangers to prizes either and many retain important links with high profile professional agencies. Nearly all the staff exhibit regularly or undertake commissions and consultancies and show an unrivalled commitment and passion for their subject as well as engaging with “state of the art research”.

The wide range of programmes on offer at the School cover traditional and contemporary art and some are unique in the UK – Glyndŵr University is one of the the only institutions in the UK offering a degree in Illustration for Children’s Publishing, and is launching another exciting new undergraduate programme in 2009 in Illustration for Graphic Novels. This explores the “comic book” genre. Also on offer for the first time this year are new degrees in Fashion and Textiles, Digital Art for Computer Games and also Decorative Design. The close relationship the School has with other subjects and academic areas in Glyndŵr University ensures that students are able to see practical applications for their skills across a wide range of vocations and the support given by the University’s Enterprise Unit has allowed many of the School’s graduates to establish their own successful businesses.

The School supports the Research Centre for Art and Design which focuses on practice based research, design, innovation and enterprise together with applied research for curriculum development.

The School is located five minutes’ walk away from the Plas Coch site, near the town centre. It occupies a pre-Victorian building full of character and inspiration. The workshops are spacious with excellent facilities with individual workspaces for students. The school enjoys excellent working European and International links and students have the opportunity to explore their subject in Poland, Finland, Bulgaria, Italy, India and China, These are all countries where the school has well developed links with universities and design schools.
