Glyndŵr University Commercial Services, which covers Catering and Hospitality, Conferencing and Events, and Accommodation Services, has achieved Hospitality Assured status. Hospitality Assured promotes and rewards the highest standards of service excellence for organisations in the Hospitality Industry and is endorsed by the British Quality Foundation and Quality Scotland Foundation

In qualifying for the Hospitality Assured accreditation, Glyndŵr University Commercial Services underwent a rigorous assessment process over a two-day period to ensure they maintained high standards of service. The key areas of focus included customer and competitor research, business and operational planning, customer service delivery, training and development, and customer satisfaction improvements. The Hospitality Assured accreditation was undertaken by a team of independent assessors from MQA Ltd. on behalf of the Institute of Hospitality, which is the professional body for hospitality industry managers worldwide.

Commenting on the accreditation, Head of Commercial Services, Lynda Powell said: "We are delighted to have achieved Hospitality Assured. A new group for students is meeting in the Regent Street Methodist Church on Sunday evenings every fortnight. There will be a chance to chat, share stories and make new friends. The first meeting is on Sunday 7th February at 7.30 pm.

The Welcome Meeting is open to all students who want to know more about the Christian faith as explorers or as neighbours of another faith.
There is coffee/tea at 7pm and students are welcome at that time.
There is a Christian service at 6pm for those who would like to join that. Come to all or some of the evening.

GLYNDŴR STUDENT GUIDE TO FINANCIAL CONTINGENCY FUNDS EMERGENCY LOAN PAYMENTS 2009/2010

Description

Short Term Emergency Loans are available to students whose student loan cheque has been delayed at the start of the academic year or for students who encounter unforeseen short-term financial difficulty. 

The value of the loan available depends on individual circumstances.

How do I apply?

You can apply to the Fund by completing an application form which lets you provide all the details we need to confirm your eligibility and assess your financial position.  Application forms are available from Student Funding and Welfare office in the Student Guild building. 

What is the next stage in the process?

The next stage in the process is the calculation of the case. 

How will I be paid?

Payment will be made by BACS direct into a bank account. If the student wishes, it is possible to pay a third party cheque directly e.g. to a landlord or crèche. 

Repayment

The student must arrange with the Student Funding and Welfare Service a repayment date for the agreed short-term loan.

New starters 2009/10 - Have you applied for Student Funding?

To be eligible for the Student Support package for a Full-time Undergraduate course you are about to undertake (different rules for nursing students and students normally domiciled in Scotland see below) you need to complete and return a 2009/10 PN1 application form. If you haven’t already done so contact your Student Finance section at your Local Education Authority or Library Board ASAP or download a form from the following website:-

Glyndŵr University Bursary

To assist you during your time at Glyndŵr University we have created our own bursary scheme.

This is available to eligible full-time undergraduate students (those in receipt of a nursing or social work bursary will not be entitled to this bursary). The assessment of your eligibility for this will be carried out when you apply for your main student funding via a PN1 or SAS3 application form. Start up grants and Financial Contingency Fund

You may be eligible for a Start up grant which is intended to cover programme related costs such as travel and childcare. A Financial Contingency Fund exists to provide financial help to students who face difficulties in meeting their living costs.

EU non-UK funding

In brief, the only funding available at present for EU students is support with tuition fees. European Union nationals are subject to the same tuition fee as students whose permanent place of residence is in Wales. In 2009/10 you will be charged a tuition fee of £3,225 and, like Welsh-domiciled students, you will be eligible for the Welsh Assembly fee grant of up to £1,940. The remaining £1,285 of the tuition fee will be covered in 2009/10 by a scholarship from Glyndwr University. Therefore, you will not have to find the cost of your tuition fees but you will have to fund your living costs.

Glyndŵr University Bursary

The Glyndŵr University bursary is available to all full-time undergraduate students from the UK who meet the eligibility criteria. The Glyndŵr University bursary is up to £1,000 and offered on three different levels based on your family’s household income. This is an annual payment to help cover your course-related costs, and application must be made each year.

The three levels are as follows:

a. £1,000* for all students with a household income of up to £18,370
b. £750* for all students with a household income of £18,371-£22,000
c. £500* for all students with a household income from £22,001-£95,000

*These figures include the Welsh National Bursary of £319.

Your local authority in Wales,Scottish Awards Agency, Education Library Board in NI or Student Finance England will carry out an assessment of your eligibility for the bursary when they assess you for your main student support ie tuition fee loan, maintenance grant Assembly Learning Grant/Maintenance loans.

In order to be assessed for the main support and our bursary you must complete a funding form, e.g. PN1 (New Student) or PR1 (Returning Student), as soon as possible. You do not have to apply separately for the bursary as we can gather your information from the PN1/PR1form.

Stop Smoking Wales is a free NHS service which provides:
- Local and friendly support for smokers who are ready to quit.
- A 6 week intensive support programme.
- Brief advice on Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT, e.g. patches and gum etc.) and other treatment aids.  These are available on prescription from your GP to help you quit.

Have you had a full course of MMR vaccinations?

If haven’t then you remain vulnerable to measles, mumps and rubella.  So please check it out, and if you think you have missed a dose of MMR please contact your GP practice. They can check for you and give the vaccine if you need it
 
Measles is a highly contagious, potentially fatal disease. In a national outbreak in Wales in 2009 over 40 people were hospitalised. 
Mumps is also highly contagious and universities and colleges have experienced multiple outbreaks since 2004.  Symptoms can include pain and swelling in the neck and testicles.
Rubella (German measles) remains an important part of the vaccination to reduce the risk of rubella affecting unborn children.
 
So if you think you need an MMR, don’t put it off.  Sort out your immunisation and protect yourself today!

Background

The Vice-Chancellor instigated a review of the academic structure and of the student-facing administrative services of the University in October 2008. 

The Review Group considering administrative restructuring operated by meeting with all staff in the School Offices and a range of staff from central operational departments responsible for delivering services. (Membership of the Review Group is given in Appendix 1)

The work of the Review Group has been extended to consider an appropriate administrative structure to support the new academic structure of the University.

The Review Group has sought to manage change effectively and in a way that does not risk the stability of the University.  This approved framework focuses on the current School Offices, the provision of services to students by the School Offices and administrative support for the new Schools and Institutes. 

Key Principles

The University is now entering into a period of consultation regarding the proposed restructuring. 

• The administrative functions based in the current School Offices will be brought together into one central administration office: Student and Programmes Centre. 
• Staff in the School Offices will be organised in teams: a general administration team and programme administration teams.
• The School Office staff will be part of the University administrative structure, reporting through School Registrars to the Academic Registrar.
• The Executive Director/Director of Schools and the School Registrars will be supported by the general administration team.

Benefits of implementation

The Review Group has identified a number of benefits that would be derived from the proposed re-structuring:

• Prevention of duplication of work and data, improving both efficiency and accuracy of data.
• Communication: School Office staff will be part of an administrative structure with communication mechanisms.
• Professionalisation of School Office staff: line management by senior administrative staff will provide greater support, greater consistency of operation, staff development and career development opportunities for School Office staff.
• Efficiency:
  • Common line management of School Office staff will ensure consistency in administrative processes and an enhanced understanding of the context of tasks undertaken.Enhanced provision of electronic services,
  • Ability for administrative staff to provide cover for each other during absences.
• Familiarity with programmes: the creation of programme administration teams will retain the familiarity that School Office staff have currently with the academic staff and students associated with particular programmes, whilst introducing consistency of practice and ability to provide cover for staff in other programme areas.  PGT programmes: common processes for support for PGT programmes.
• Interface between School Offices, Admissions team and International Office: these offices currently undertake roles that overlap, but with communication restricted by the current structure, limiting the efficiency of the service provided.

Information and Advice for Students

The University is open as normal, in line with the guidance provided by relevant Government Departments.  The University will be promoting The Catch it, Bin it, Kill it campaign to encourage good hygiene and to help mitigate the risk to staff and students.

Symptoms:

The symptoms of swine flu are broadly the same as those of ordinary flu, but may be more severe and cause more serious complications.  The typical symptoms are:

• sudden fever (a high body temperature of over 38C or 100.4F), and
• sudden cough.

Other symptoms may include:

• headache,
• tiredness,
• chills,
• aching muscles,
• limb or joint pain,
• diarrhea or stomach upset,
• sore throat,
• runny nose,
• sneezing, and
• loss of appetite.

If you have flu-like symptoms and are concerned, you should have consideration for your own health and for fellow students and staff and stay at home.  You should also check your symptoms by calling the swine flu information line on 0800 1 513 513.  If you have taken these steps and are still concerned, call your GP or NHS Direct Wales on 0845 46 47.  Do not travel out to your GP or hospital.

Current public health advice suggests that people who are symptom free, who have been in contact with those with swine flu, should carry on as normal, whilst monitoring themselves for symptoms.

The advice issued by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills about Swine Flu emphasises the importance of ensuring that the University has up to date contact information for all students to ensure that it is possible to communicate effectively and efficiently in the event of a pandemic being confirmed.

I am starting University for the first time this September.  Should I still arrive at the University on 21 September?

Yes, the University is operating as normal so, unless you are feeling ill and have flu-like symptoms, we look forward to seeing you in September.

If you are ill and are unable to attend on 21 September, please contact your School Office (and Accommodation Services, if you will be staying in a hall of residence) and notify them that you will be late arriving and give your estimated date of arrival.  You should not come to the University until you have finished the course of treatment and are symptom-free.  You will be provided with essential information and induction material and any coursework you’ve missed when you arrive.

When you arrive in Wrexham, you are strongly advised to register with a local doctor (GP) as soon as possible.  This can be done at the Glyndwr Heath Centre on the University campus during the enrolment week.  There are two practices that hold surgeries on campus.

How can I protect against swine flu?

The most valuable protection against pandemic flu is to follow NHS hygiene precautions and in particular to wash your hands more regularly than you would normally. 

• Cover your nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing, using a tissue when possible. 
• Dispose of dirty tissues promptly and carefully. 
• Wash hands frequently with soap and water to reduce the spread of the virus from your hands to face or to other people. 
• Clean hard surfaces, such as door handles, frequently using a normal cleaning product.

What should I do if a member of my household develops swine flu?

You should continue to attend University as normal but please alert your Programme Leader via the School Office and follow advice issued by the Health Protection Agency.

What should I do if I have to care at home for a dependant with swine flu?

You should contact your Programme Leader (or if absent, another appropriate member of the department) via the School Office and inform them of the reason for your absence and how long it is expected to last.  It is essential that any absence is appropriately recorded in order to mitigate against any adverse impact on your progress of study.

What should I do if a close family member is admitted to hospital with swine flu?

You should contact your Programme Leader (or if absent, another appropriate member of the department) via the School Office and inform them of the reason for your absence and how long it is expected to last.  It is essential that any absence is appropriately recorded in order to mitigate against any adverse impact on your progress of study.

What should I do if I develop symptoms of swine flu?

If you have flu-like symptoms, you should stay at home.

You can check your symptoms at the NHS Wales website or by calling the Swine Flu Information Line on 0800 1 513 513.

If you are still concerned, contact NHS Direct Wales on 0845 4647 or your GP by telephone. Do not go to your GP surgery or Accident and Emergency department unless you are advised to do so.

You should also follow the normal sickness reporting procedure by advising your Programme Leader via the School Office of any absence from your programme of study.

It is essential that any absence is appropriately recorded in order to mitigate against any adverse impact on your progress of study.

Normally, you are able to self-certificate for up to five days.  Unless you miss an examination, class test or an assignment deadline (in which case you should contact your School Office for advice), self-certification will be acceptable for cases of swine flu as the symptoms usually only last for seven days.  You are advised however to keep records/copies of anything issued to you that indicate that you’ve suffered from swine flu (eg if based in England, a copy of your authorisation number for antiviral medication).

What should I do if there is a disruption to my normal travel arrangements?

You should contact your Programme Leader via the School Office as soon as you can to mitigate against any adverse impact on your progress of study.

What should I do if the delivery of a programme is affected by swine flu?

If the programme is affected by an academic being off sick with swine flu then it is expected that all course material will be on-line for you to access in their absence. 

Note: it is anticipated that those affected by swine flu will be off for one week unless complications occur.

Is international travel affected?

International travel plans should be subject to Foreign Office website guidance.

What if I am particularly vulnerable to infection?

If you are suffering from respiratory conditions or are otherwise medically vulnerable you are advised to consult your GP to ensure your vaccinations are up-to-date. 

I am not a citizen of the United Kingdom, what should I do?

Overseas students will receive free treatment for swine flu but must be registered with a doctor.  The Department of Health has published information for overseas visitors.

What should I do if I am unable to attend an examination because of swine flu?

I am a student living in Halls of Residencies, how can I best manage the situation?

• Regardless of whether you have any flu-like symptoms
• Get registered with a doctor
• Agree amongst your friends/fellow students to keep in contact with each other via phone or text if unwell
• Ensure that you stock up with plenty of water and soft drinks.
• If you develop a flu like illness or suspect you have swine flu

• If you are still concerned, contact NHS Direct 0845 46 47 or your doctor by telephone.  To help to contain the virus please do not go to your surgery or the University Health Centre.

If diagnosed with, or advised you may have swine flu

• Contact the School Office by phone to inform them you will not be attending classes
• Contact your friends/fellow students by phone or text to let them know
• Please stay in you room as much as possible to contain the virus
• Let the Accommodation staff know by phone that you are unwell.

During your illness

• Stay in your room
• Try to use any shared facilities at quiet times to minimise contact with others.  Whilst showering put your clothes in a plastic bag rather than leaving them lying around.
• Wash your hands before leaving your room
• Keep your window open as much as possible to ensure adequate ventilation
• Keep in touch with your friends/fellow students by phone or text
• Keep in touch with close family
• If you wish to return home, collection by your family is recommended to minimise contact with others.  You would not be permitted to fly.

Managing the illness

• Take medicines such as aspirin, ibuprofen or paracetamol every 4-6 hours to relieve the symptoms of flu, however you should always read the label and seek medical advice if you are unsure
• Drink plenty of fluids: 2-3 litres a day is recommended
• Rest as much as possible

Reduce the risk of spreading illness

• Cover your nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing, using a tissue
• Dispose of used tissues promptly and carefully into a plastic bag.  Keep the bag in your room until you are recovered then arrange disposal with Accommodation staff
• Maintain good basic hygiene by washing your hands frequently to reduce the spread of the virus to other people
• Clean hard surfaces/door handles frequently using a normal cleaning product
• Discourage visitors, but keep in touch with others by means of phone, text or e-mail
• Wash used items of crockery / cutlery in your sink using your usual washing up liquid, then leave outside your door for your friends/fellow students to return to the kitchen.
